Amazon Web Services announced today they will be offering a simple email sending service. The cost will be $0.10 per thousand messages. This announcement comes just weeks after AWS told the world they would be offering a simple DNS service. It looks like Amazon is systematically offering to replace technologies that traditionally are handled inside the IT department of most companies. This is great news for everyone involved. I hope that Amazon will continue to make these new offerings easy to use and understand. Services such as the Elastic Load Balancing and Simple Notification Service came out and were not entirely user friendly, not well documented and didn’t offer any advanced load balancing functionality. The GUI they released for the load balancing service hugely improved the ability to use it and I hope they continue along this same path with these new offerings. The cloud space is becoming very crowded and already players like RackSpace are coming out with better features that are easier to manage such as the ability to scale a server up on the fly.
